Deepika visits home in B'lore for Ganesh Chaturthi!
Ganesh Chaturthi has always been a special festival at the Padukone home. Last year, Deepika couldn't visit Bangalore as she was busy with Om Shanti Om, so this year she made it a point to be with her parents.
The actress says, "Since childhood, Ganesh Chaturthi has been the most important festival celebrated at home, as we are Mangaloreans. We celebrate Gauri and Ganesh together but ever since I moved to Mumbai I haven't got a chance to go back much. However, I do try and keep in touch with my roots as much as possible."
During this period Deepika also turns vegetarian. "We celebrate Gauri and Ganesh and go vegetarian for two days. On the puja day, mom, my younger sister and I decorate the house with flowers, candles and diyas. We also follow a special vegetarian menu for a few days. The rituals of Gauri puja is somewhat similar to the north Indian way of celebrating karva chauth, though we don't fast. We eat only specific things and avoid rice, garlic or onion. I think it's a nice way to keep discipline. There is some food which has to be cooked at home like besan ka laddoo and chaklis, so I help mom to make that. We also dress up in our traditional best."
Bad throat Deepika who has been suffering from a bad throat for the last one week, fondly remembers her best memory of Ganesh Chaturthi. "I would go with mom to shop for specific flowers and puja material at the local market but I can't do it now. I feel bad that mom has to go alone."
