Their first movie together, three pretty girls for company (for Ranbir) and many prestigious projects- it's no surprise that Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor are excited about things to come. Geety Sahgal in conversation with B-town's IT couple
She looks stunning in a short blue dress, while he is dashing in a checked-shirt over a tee and jeans and a brand new hairstyle. They are a couple in real life, but whether they come together in Bachna Ae Haseeno, their first film together, is something they refuse to talk about!
"Watch the film," chorus Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor.
Deepika who was on the lookout for lead roles to follow up her outing in Om Shanti Om agreed instantly to Bachna… a three heroine project , because the casting was bang-on. "Bipasha, Minissha and I enter Ranbir's life at different stages and each is crucial to his growth. I agreed as soon as I heard the narration," she says.
According to Ranbir, a gripping script is the criteria when selecting his films. The role comes second, the director and then the production house, in that order.
"Aditya Chopra wrote the script of Bachna.. about 10 years ago and when Siddharth Anand, who is my close friend, read it, he fell in love with it. He called me over ( I was doing Saawariya at that time) and narrated it to me. Like him, I also fell in love with the young, frothy story. My character Raj, who is a fun-loving guy sounded a lot like me so I was all for it."
As for the comparisons when he frolics to his dad Rishi Kapoor's chartbuster Bachna ae haseeno in the film, Ranbir appears unfazed.
"I'm a big fan of Rishi Kapoor as he had his own charm and ada, but I don't think I want to copy that image. I'm just proud that I am getting a chance to dance to one of his most popular songs!"
While Ranbir goes with his instincts while portraying a character, Deepika says that when she takes up a film she trusts her director and surrenders to him completely. Smiles the beautiful actress…."Ranbir has worked as an assistant director, while acting is a whole new world for me, so his take on cinema is completely different from mine. Both of us are now two films old but we tackle our work differently."
Ranbir is not shy to admit that like his character Raj, in the film he too has had his share of relationships while growing up. "A lot of people try to put their past and ex-girlfriends behind them but I feel one should always honour and respect a relationship, as a little bit of the person always remains with us!" As for the kind of girls which hold his attention, the young Kapoor says slowly. "At least, I never had any preconceived notions about my partner. I think love just happens! And let me tell you, falling in love is easy, but holding on to a relationship is not. One has to work a lot on any relationship."
And how did Deepika feel watching her beau romancing the sexy Bipasha and petite Minissha in the film? "Oh, there is no question of jealousy as our personal and professional lives are two different things. We both understand that our work requires us to be in proximity with the opposite sex!"
The duo is riding high today with enviable projects opposite top-league co-stars. Deepika has a Chandni Chowk To China in which she plays a double role once again, and there is Saif Khan's home production with Imtiaz Ali. Ranbir is kicked about Raj Kumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Ghajab Kahani ( with Katrina Kaif), Karan Johar's Wake Up Sid opposite Konkana Sen and Prakash Jha's Rajniti.
"Every film is a challenge as a lot of me goes into it. When I take on a film, I work on every aspect from the conceiving to the release," says Ranbir.
The young Kapoor does not feel that his debut film Saawariya, which did not work at the box-office, was a mistake, for as he says, "Every film I do is very important for me. Saawariya brought me recognition, critical acclaim and so many awards. Given a chance I would make my debut with Saawariya all over again!"
"I've watched it three times and I liked it a lot, " says Deepika and to Ranbir's question about how many times she watched her first film Om Shanti Om she sheepishly admits "10 times!"
Are they nervous about Bachna... ?
"I'm not nervous as Yash Raj has made a great film but I am nervous for myself as this is my second release," says Ranbir, while Deepika nods in agreement.
Something tells us that it is going to be a double delight for the audiences.
